Good Friday
“It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: The King of the Jews. Darkness came over the whole land … and Jesus cried out in a loud voice “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15)
At first glance, nothing about what happened on this day 2,000 years ago can be considered ‘good’. Death, darkness, suffering and sorrow are not the usual characteristics of a good news story. And yet this is what makes the Christian story so very different from any other story. Christians believe that all history hangs on the moment that Jesus hung upon the cross. In many ways the imagery is all so ordinary, a carpenter is nailed to two pieces of wood. And yet, as we will see, the consequences are extraordinary and life-changing for everyone.
How can you make room for stillness today to consider the magnitude of this moment?
